Review of national arrangements for the protection and management of identity informationThe Department of Home Affairs has commissioned a Review of National Arrangements for the Protection and Management of Identity Information. The Review is being conducted by Mr Roger Wilkins AO, former Secretary of the Attorney-General’s Department. Mr Wilkins is being supported by Professor David Lacey, founder and Managing Director of IDCARE. The Review has been commissioned to determine ways to enhance or strengthen arrangements that support and govern the protection and management of identity information in order to:
The Review’s recommendations may provide the basis for a future iteration of the National Identity Security Strategy that would be agreed between the Commonwealth and the states and territories. The Review is supported by a secretariat in the Department of Home Affairs. Public submissions are invited on matters covered in the Review’s terms of reference. National Arrangements for the Protection and Management of Identity Information The closing date for public submissions is 26 October 2018. Australia’s 2019-20 Migration ProgramThe Department of Home Affairs has developed a discussion paper titled Australia’s 2019-20 Migration Program (141KB PDF). Submissions to this discussion paper are now closed. Strengthening the test for Australian CitizenshipThe Australian Citizenship Legislation Amendment (Strengthening the Requirements for Australian Citizenship and Other Measures) Bill 2017 (the Bill) was introduced into Parliament on 15 June 2017. The Bill is not currently before the Parliament. This is the next step in the process to implement the commitment made by the Australian Government on 20 April 2017, for citizenship applicants to pledge their allegiance to Australia and undertake to uphold Australian values and demonstrate their contribution to the Australian community. This Bill implements the commitment made by the Australian Government to strengthen the requirements for Australian citizenship and the integrity and effectiveness of the citizenship programme, providing a clear legislative framework to underpin the Government’s policy. The measures set out in this Bill are integral to our future as a strong and successful multicultural nation, united by our allegiance to Australia and committed to freedom and prosperity. The 2015 National Consultation on Citizenship – Your Right, Your Responsibility (1007KB PDF) indicated strong community support for strengthening the test for Australian citizenship. The Australian Government is strengthening the test for Australian citizenship in response to this consultation. Review of customs licensing regimesThe Department is now implementing the 15 recommendations from the Review of all licensing regimes under the Customs Act 1901. Implementation of the recommendations will include consultation with industry and other Government agencies and be completed by December 2020. Introducing a temporary visa for parentsThe submission period in response to the discussion paper, closed on midnight, Monday 31 October 2016 (AEDT). On Friday 5 May 2017, the Government announced the introduction of the new temporary sponsored parent visa for parents of Australians during the 2017–18 Migration Program year. The new visa will allow Australians to sponsor their parents to stay in Australia for up to five years at a time. For more information see: Introducing the temporary sponsored parent visa Australia’s Humanitarian Program 2018-19Australia operates a dedicated Humanitarian Program that offers resettlement for refugees and others overseas who are in humanitarian need, and protection for people who arrive lawfully in Australia and engage Australia’s protection obligations. Each year, the Australian Government seeks the views of the Australian public on the Humanitarian Program. We have released the Humanitarian Program 2018-19 discussion paper (410KB PDF) that outlines how the Humanitarian Program currently operates and provides information on its management, and composition over previous years. Submissions regarding the 2018-19 Humanitarian Program are now closed. A public consultation process regarding the 2019-20 Humanitarian Program will be held in the first half of 2019.
